Closer to the cards; the clubs might provide spade discards and we can follow up with 4♠ over 3NT.”

Tignel summarises all of that for us: “3♦. The jump shift to 2♠ is horrible: on one hand, it does not guarantee four cards in Spades (but five are possible!); on the other hand, Responder is supposed to show a fit with 3♠, no matter his strength (to leave room for Opener to bid 3NT if he does not have four cards). Faced with these concerns, I prefer bidding a self-sufficient six-card suit to showing an uncertain fit with mediocre suit quality. That said, even if I were sure of the spade fit and even if 3♠ did show a slam try, I would choose the 3♦ bid regardless: playing in 6 Diamonds (even in a 6-1 fit) might potentially allow us to protect the King of Hearts on the lead and, most of all, to discard losing spades on the clubs when North does not have the top spades.”

On the other hand, some experts chose the standard bid. Allavena: “3♠. Frankly, I can’t see anything other than 3♠ for now. Moreover, in this sequence, and even more so after a pass, this shows good diamonds for me; otherwise, I would have said 1♣–1♠ directly” or Saporta: “3♠. However, if I do not make the point immediately, I am purely and simply denying four cards in Spades.”

Obviously, Chidiac had an original solution: “4♦. Two rational bids one thinks of initially are 3♦, natural forcing bid, and 3♠, showing a fit. It would be interesting to play the jump to 4♦ to show a nice six-card diamond suit and a four-card spade raise. Its only goal is to find out what conventions the experts use to show this type of hand. The large advantage is for a 3NT bid, contrary to the standard, which advocates a more balanced hand.

Lévy: “3NT. That is pretty much a reflection of this hand and I have never been very convinced by the subtle distinction between a balanced hand and a 5-4-2-2. And also, those diamonds…”

Kerlero: “3NT. A fit, no small singleton (splinter or artificial 3♥), not five good diamonds (4♠). Of course, I would prefer for the lead to come round to me but I can only do that by saying NT, denying the spade fit.”

Rarer still, Schmidt’s non-response: “Joker. Our favourite columnist is probably hoping to find out the meaning of the 3NT rebid after this start to the auction. For my partnership, it is a 5-4-2-2 (rarely 4-4-3-2) hand with very concentrated honours. By the way, we play that 4♠ is “what we were dealt”: an unusual hand, not necessarily strong, unsuitable for 4♣ (which would be 6-4 with concentrated honours). So, with 17-18 HCP balanced, we ask again with 2NT (with enough to find the 4-4 fit later) and with 19-20 HCP, we… open 2NT, which I would have done here, with 10 of the 19 points in the short suits. I cannot therefore answer the question asked within the framework of my system.”

The hand opposite was: ♠96532 ♥K32 ♦AQ4 ♣63. That was indeed the case, as North’s hand was: ♠K10975 ♥5 ♦862 ♣A1075. The hearts were breaking 5-1 and West’s minor was Diamonds! All the same, my bid did not at all garner the jury’s assent, as it only got three votes. I therefore thank Toffier: “Double. I have too much strength (and the sixth heart) for saying 4♦. Red two-suiter, forcing at Teams. It would be better here to play 3♠ as a spade-minor two-suiter but I play that as a minor two-suiter or strong single-suiter. Giving up on the diamonds (for example by saying 3♠ followed by 4♥) might mean missing an excellent diamond slam if Partner is short in Hearts (and I cannot even imagine there being fans of doubling…).” But yes, David, there are some…

To finish and, as I ask each expert to make us part of their system to allow us to discover some sometimes original, but always pertinent, conventions, three isolated responses – and therefore less classic than two-suiters with 4♣ or 4♦.

Rocafort: “2NT. Ordered to apply my system, I am doing so. 2NT shows four hearts and a five-card minor. The risk of staying there is not great, as Partner will be worried about not knowing who has which minor. Then, a 4♥ bid will clarify the situation, whereas, 4♦ over 2♠ would have described a two-suiter with 5-5 in the reds.”

Tignel: “4♠. Over 4♣ by partner, we will continue with 4♦…”

Other comments go in the same direction: Lévy: “3♠. North’s hand is unlimited; 4♠ would be very discouraging, 4♣ or 4♦ would show a good two-suiter and 3NT a good hand but not a two-suiter. I will therefore come up with the waiting bid of 3♠ (nice hand but not very strong).”

Kerlero: “3♠. Positive, without a good second suit to bid naturally (4♣ or 4♦). 3NT would be for putting on the brakes with a rubbish hand, which is far from the case with this hand.”

Toffier: “3♠. Stronger than 4♠, which I would have said with a normal minimum hand. In my partnership, we consider that with three keycards out of six (the four aces and King-Queen of Trumps), we cannot take a negative action (4♠) in this type of situation. I therefore have the choice between a cue bid (4♣), a small encouraging noise (3NT, inadequate with this trump holding) and 3♠, which I am choosing here because despite some excellent news (six spades to the Ace-Queen, to be celebrated), I have a minimum hand and big concerns in Hearts.”

Everyone in this small group agrees on the fact that the hand is pleasing but does not merit heading off into slam. The rare other experts are more optimistic.

Pacault: “4♦. For sure, 4♦ denies a club control. Usually, double shows three cards in Spades or a very strong hand, so that should do it. Yet that bid only received seven votes, including Pacault: “Double. 3♦ shows a spade fit and therefore does not suit. Double, which shows three cards in Spades or a very strong hand, does suit”, Rombaut: “Double. In my system, 3♦ promises four cards in Spades”, Nathalie Frey: “Double. The cue bid would show a spade fit in my system.”

Our understanding is that the double is more suggested by default in the event of a 3♦ cue bid being impossible.

Schmidt expands: “Double. No, Mr Columnist, I do not play 3♦ as two-way (either a raise or asking for a diamond stop). That would be a strong spade raise. So, even if a 3♣ bid would already be positive for me here (an inference from the ‘good-bad‘ 2NT), I still have a lot. Double covers three-card raises with a minimum hand but also strong hands. Partner is being asked to show flexibility and, what’s more, here, with my 19 points added to those of the overcaller, I am not too worried about the idea of hearing a kangaroo-jump in Spades.”

Conversely, Lévy plays the bid as two-way: “3♦. Asks for a diamond stop with a solid club single-suiter; or extremely strong in Spades, to be revealed on the following round.” He is supported by Kerlero: “3♦. Denies three cards in Spades (whereas the double promises them for me) and can only rarely hide a spade fit since I have splinters of 4♦ and 4♥ and a strong raise to 4♠ (balanced) available.”

My appetite was not fully sated by these comments. What about, for example, a 2NT bid, which could show a spade fit since the natural meaning is rarely useful in this sequence; this would free up the 3♦ bid for a stop ask. In the end, other experts had an excellent idea as Partner was 5-5 in the majors on this deal!

Rocafort: “2♥. I am fiercely opposed to Double, which might not always show three cards in Spades. However, good-bad is perfectly suited to strong hands that do not work with a double for that reason that I shall not repeat. My initial idea was therefore to bid 5♥ and see what happens. But, after all, I may as well make my partner interested in the auction: if West says 5♠, he might take a position himself after my 4♠ (whereas after 5♥, he will pass 100% of the time). Imagine opposite: ♠QJ3 ♥AJ96543 ♦2 ♣75. Why not, huh?”

Rocafort: “4NT. Before knowing what move to make, you need to ask yourself where you want to end up. You might expect the opponents to have enough to make ten tricks, more rarely eleven, or maybe just nine, and that we ourselves have ten, or more likely, eleven. Might the mention of it being pairs provide the subtext that the opponents are a decent threat? A Blackwood bid might intimidate them and, if not, we will have to settle for doubling 5♠.”

One level up, we find:

Jill Meyers: “5♥. I do not think this will stop in 4♥, so I am putting pressure on the opponents by bidding 5♥ straightaway.”

Kerlero: “5♥. There is no question of allowing them to play in 4 Spades and I can hope to beat 5 Spades by leading the King of Diamonds, so I am putting my opponents up to the level where I want to see them play. Sometimes, they crack and go to 6 Spades in the fog and then, my chances are even better, of course. Going through 4♦ leaves them too much room for showing things; I am the one on lead and I do not want to sacrifice in 6 Hearts against 5 Spades.”

Finally, the more audacious go straight to the 6-level. Obviously without expecting to make it but hoping that the opponents bid over it.

Lévy: “6♥. Cheaper than game (100 or 300), puts West’s back against the wall; he doesn’t have much aside from spades and I reserve the hope of taking 6 Spades down (bad decision if 6 Spades is making).”

Rombaut: “6♥. No matter what I say, there is a chance of hearing Spades just above it. I think that my opponents can make 5 Spades, so I am trying to push them to 6 Spades.”

Allavena: “6♥. The question is a classic. To what extent do we go on a chase and how do we provoke the opponents into slipping due to lack of space? Knowing that I will be on lead, bidding Diamonds is not very necessary since the decision will not be up to my partner. So I prefer 6♥ to 6♦ to keep them in the dark. If they double, I hope that 5 Spades was making and I will have done my job. If they say 6♠, I have a good chance of beating them and will lead the King of Diamonds.”

Toffier: “6♥. With this type of hand, you need to put the opponents’ backs against the wall. It is likely that West holds some strength with a big spade fit and he will tend to bid 6♠ over the top. It is very unlikely, after the lead of the King of Diamonds, that the opposing side will be able to make 6 Spades; but does one ever know?”

Here, Partner had a “modern” 3♥ opening: ♠J ♥AKJ653 ♦6532 ♣76. The 5-Heart contract was going down if the opponents took their diamond ruff. 5 Spades was going down.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-7daac7c" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
On crazy hands at a high level, there is no truth.
