My partner was not soft to directly end the auction by bidding game with only 8 HCP. This was explained by a double fit and a 6-4 distribution. As I was doubled, I had to expect a bad trump break. It was better to give up on making this contract and try to limit the number of undertricks. My bids were standard, the majority of players (the &#8220;field&#8221;) was probably in the same boat as me. I had to try to draw trumps in order to profit from setting up the long suit in <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>. I won the <span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> lead&nbsp;to play a&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;towards the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>K&nbsp;that held. Be careful not to fall for the illusion created by your right-hand opponent. For him to have doubled, he certainly held all the other trumps. If you insisted to play in Trumps, you would quickly find yourself void of trumps and your opponents would run their long suits. You had to start by establishing your <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span> suit. I played&nbsp;a <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>&nbsp;from dummy, they rose with the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>A&nbsp;to return a <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>. I put the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>K, which took the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>Q (with a singleton <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>, there would have been a <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span> lead). It is often good to postpone playing the trump suit to avoid ending up without trumps too quickly.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-fdc1b62\" data-block-id=\"fdc1b62\"><style>.stk-fdc1b62{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-bcf515a\" data-block-id=\"bcf515a\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">I then tried to draw the trumps, but the defence insisted&nbsp;with another&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>&nbsp;to make me ruff and I was forced to go down 2 for a heavy penalty of -500! Was this a bad board? Most often yes, but not here. The vast majority of players to whom I was compared suffered the same inconvenience as me but didn&#8217;t manage to limit the damage and got an even more severe penalty. I scored 57%.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-d7eb364\" data-block-id=\"d7eb364\"><style>.stk-d7eb364{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000fc;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"><strong>Second deal: If unsure, play in 3NT<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"469\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-239.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-239.png 469w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-239-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>With my ugly 16 points, I shouldn&#8217;t be afraid and I overcalled 2NT over the opponents&#8217;&nbsp;2<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> pre-empt. It would be more dangerous to pass. Over my partner&#8217;s transfer to Hearts with 3<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>, I needed to correct to 3<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;in order to allow him to pass if he was weak. Over 3NT, I needed to decide between playing this contract or correcting to my fit in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>. Playing in 3NT, we can sometimes make without establishing the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;by taking 4 tricks in <span style=\"color: #e6790c;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span>, 2 in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>&nbsp;and 3 in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East won the lead with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>A to switch to a <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>. I had good stoppers, I could test establishing the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>. West rose with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>A to play a second round of&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>&nbsp;that I won. I played another&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;and West followed with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>J. Against Argine, do not cover with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>Q. If the opening leader had started with&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>AKJ, he would have won the first round of&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>K, a lower card. The&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>K&nbsp;was therefore with East. In hand with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>J, the opening leader had no more&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>&nbsp;to play and had to switch. I had time to play a third round of&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;to establish my length and make my contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defence erred by not insisting in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>. Should he bid <span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;or show the fit in <span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>? Should he force or invite to game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have the answer to these questions. There are pros and cons. Personally, I like to show a fit rapidly when my opponents overcall and I jump to game less easily at pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without much conviction, I chose the X followed by 3<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>, which allowed me to invite to game in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span> without missing out on a big fit in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>East led the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>A, then switched to a&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>. This was strange. Why was the opening leader setting about playing in my strong <span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660; <\/span>suit rather than trying his luck against dummy&#8217;s three small diamonds? Very often, he would have a singleton&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>. Should I give up on establishing my <span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;length at all? The alternative would be to ruff the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>&nbsp;and try finesses in <span style=\"color: #e6790c;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span>. I didn&#8217;t choose this option for two reasons. From the auction, the strength was on my left, the <span style=\"color: #e6790c;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2666;<\/span> finesses&nbsp;would often fail. For the <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span> ruffs, I would be forced to ruff with honours in&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>, which would weaken me for handling the trumps. I chose to establish the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>. As expected, he had a singleton but refused to ruff! With small trumps, he would not have denied this gift. He must hold the Queen-third or -fourth in Trumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since he didn&#8217;t want to ruff, I would encourage him to do so. Impose on your opponent what he doesn&#8217;t want to do! I continued with another&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #053fed;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2660;<\/span>&nbsp;from the dummy, ruffed with the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>9, and again the opening leader refused to ruff and discarded a <span style=\"color: var(--paletteColor1, #00A336);\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2663;<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I cashed the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>A and then played a&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>x towards the&nbsp;<span style=\"color: #ee0707;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">&#x2665;<\/span>J that held.
