Or should he then have said 4NT himself if he had 11 points? I do not think so. Personally, I prefer to think that it is he who first made a bid that might show fewer points than he really has who has to bid again. The (slight) majority chose to bid again but via different methods. The most “basic” opted for a quantitative 4NT, certainly showing the points but hiding this special distribution.

Harari: “4NT. Quantitative. Unfortunately, 4♥ here would show four-card support with a very strong hand. Partner can always still suggest playing in Hearts if he has five cards and a good hand.”

Lévy: “4NT. An ace more than expected does deserve a try. With my apologies if there are nine top tricks.”

Allavena: “4NT. I have trouble seeing which higher contract I will make if my partner has nothing extra but I also have trouble passing with this monster hand.”

Kokish, however, has an opinion on North’s hearts: “4NT. If North were interested in heart support, he would have said 3♦, which for us is simply a waiting bid (not really a fit) made with hands with which one cannot say 3♥ (six cards), 4♣ (slam try) or 3NT (8-10 HCP with stops in the majors). Therefore, 4♥ now would show four cards. A natural 4NT bid is therefore sufficient.”

Kerlero: “4NT. Delicate. With an ace more than promised, one feels obliged to go up one, despite risking going down. One would also like to show the heart fragment by saying 4♥ but the bid should show four-card support and a hand judged to be too strong for a 3♠ splinter.”

Others preferred to lie. But with good reasons, of course. Quantin: “4♥. Yes, I know; the bid guarantees four cards. But aside from the fact that 4 Hearts in a 4-3 fit might be the best contract, I do not really see what to say next. Now it is my turn for a question: are you sure you should open 1♦?”

Schmidt: “4♥. Technically, a heart raise at this stage would show four cards in the suit but there seems to me to be a choice between cheating with the size of the fit (4♥), a statistically average bid (4NT) and a disillusioned pass. At least by saying 4♥, I should be in a playable contract and I ensure that Partner will only bid again with good trumps (looking at my hand, I imagine that there cannot be much that is appealing about his aside from the hearts).”

Thomas Bessis: “4♥. Never mind; I have bid as though I were supporting Hearts with a hand too strong for a direct 3♠ splinter over the 1♥ response. With this lack of intermediates in the minors, I have the feeling that it will be easier to make ten tricks with Hearts as Trumps than nine in NT and if, by any chance, Partner finds another bid…”

Finally, two original people produced a bid that I liked a lot because it should indeed show this type of hand, so I raised their score in the final results…

Toffier: “4♠. Saying 4♥ would seem to mean that we hold four cards in Hearts and that the 3♣ bid only showed three cards (the same hand, in fact, with one club fewer and one heart more). Bidding 4NT would risk missing the 5-3 fit in Hearts and would be acceptable by switching the Spades and the Hearts. I therefore think that a 4♠ bid does indeed show this type of hand with only three hearts.”

If Partner does get the message, this is perfect! However, despite this very powerful hand with its four aces and two kings, twelve experts chose to stay there. Let us examine their reasons.

Pacault: “Pass. The suits are gappy, a diamond fit unlikely, the tricks insufficient for a potential 4NT bid.”

Tignel: “Pass. Without a nine-card fit – and maybe even an eight-card fit – slam is remote. What is more, no bid enables us to describe the hand (4♥ would promise four cards). It is therefore wise to pass. If there is slam on, bidding it would no doubt have been facilitated by a strong opening…”

Rocafort: “Pass. The situation is uncomfortable. It is very tempting to bid again but how? With 4♥, which would correspond to four cards and which would not accurately get across South’s ambitions?”

Nathalie Frey: “Pass. A bit wimpy, without a doubt, not to honour these 22 wonderful points but, for me, 4♥ would show four cards. I prefer to give up.”

Chemla: “Pass. You can see here the risk in opening 1♦ with such a strong hand. I would have preferred a strong artificial 2♣. Now, opposite a partner who can have 5 or 6 points, there is no guarantee of making 4NT!”

Chidiac: “Pass. My partner does not have rebiddable hearts or a diamond stop (nor Queen-doubleton, as he would have said 3♦), not enough resources for a quantitative bid. I cannot visualise enough tricks to imagine making a slam and I am even sometimes risking putting myself in danger by continuing with a quantitative 4NT. I thought that passing would collect more votes non-vulnerable, as game seems both difficult to make with the singleton spade and without a diamond fit, the longest suit to be worked on.

Only three experts opted for prudence, including Lévy: “Pass. Less optimistic than with the previous hand” and Pacault: “Pass. 3♣ is a protective bid which can be from 8 to 11 HCP. The suits are quite strong but the 4-4-4-1 shape does not enourage me to put 3NT on the table.” The majority opted for the pragmatic 3NT bid.

Some with regret, such as Rombaut: “3NT. Game should go down but that will surely not come down to much. It would perhaps be more sensible to pass 3♣” or Kokish, about whom I wrote earlier that I shared his opinion: “3NT. Not terrible, as 3♣ is very ambiguous and we can hardly see a source of tricks. But at least North knows that we have Hearts well stopped and we are short in Spades (whereas 3♥ would show a stop such as Axx or Jxx) and can therefore decide not to pass 3NT.”

Hackett: “3NT. Partner will know that I have a spade shortage and will go to 5♣ with weak spades.”

Schmidt: “3NT. With the absolute conviction that this will be the winning bid at the end of the day, compared to looking for game or slam in Clubs.”

Bessis: “3NT. We should very often be playing in 5 of a minor and not 3NT in these types of situations but I do not see why I would not let my partner judge his spade stop (when I have shown a singleton nine times out of ten) and decide which game to play in. After all, whenever Partner has points in Spades, it is very definitely 3NT that we should be in (♠KQ97 ♥764 ♦Q3 ♣A632)…”

Harari: “3NT. I know; you could say 3♥ to play in Clubs instead if Partner does not have points in Spades. But 3NT is still the most likely game contract and 3♥ is very ambiguous (we might have ♠86 ♥987 ♦AKQ82 ♣AK94, for example, or even ♠86 ♥98 ♦AKQ82 ♣AK94). That said, I predict a large majority for 3♥ in the bidding contest.”

Not so, David: the 3NT bid, which leaves Partner the duty of judging the final contract, won it. The more technical 3♥ was, however, mentioned frequently.

Let us see why. Quantin: “3♥. To avoid playing in 3NT opposite four small spades. if North says 3♠ over 3♥, I will be reassured and will be able to declare 3NT.”

Tignel: “3♥. With only 15 HCP and without a five-card suit, game is a long way off. As the points are very nice, I will still make an effort in a teams match, holding more hopes for a game in Clubs than in NT. Hence the bid of 3♥ rather than that of 3NT: too committal.”

Thuillez: “3♥. For now, even though that might ask for something in the suit, I do not want to sign off in 3NT opposite four small spades with 6 Clubs on the table.”

Cronier: “3♥. Fourth suit, in principle. But if North does not say 3♠, it will no doubt be better to play 5 Clubs rather than 3NT.”

Chemla: “3♥. I do not see the trap. It is a priori a natural bid. But nothing is stopping my partner, if he wants to play in 3NT, from bidding 3♠.”

Adad: “3♥. Natural description of a mid-range hand, which shows a spade shortage and permits North to contemplate 5 Clubs or 3NT depending on the quality of his spades.”

Saporta: “3♥. A bid that clearly shows the spade shortage and should allow North to judge his values. I will pass over 3NT (♠KQ97 ♥76 ♦Q6 ♣Q10832) and over 4♣ (♠Q7632 ♥763 ♦4 ♣AQ76). I will bid Blackwood over 4♦ (♠97653 ♥107 ♦K ♣AQ873).”

All these comments got me thinking. I admit that with 3NT no doubt showing a spade shortage, it would perhaps be more useful to reserve the 3♥ bid for hands looking for a complementary stop or to play 3NT from the other hand. I shall discuss it with my partner.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-ff770c4" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-ff-770-c-4-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
Technical bids are often useful but pragmatic bids can sometimes turn out to be just as descriptive about the hand.

Scores

3NT: 100 (13 votes)
3♥: 70 (10 votes)
Pass: 20 (3 votes)

Deal 3: Fear does not keep the danger at bay

Pairs tournament

Big advantage to a 3♥ bid. Still, two fans of 3NT (or of Bob Hamman?), including Harari: “3NT. Bob Hamman‘s rule again (if 3NT is a possible bid, make it). If yes, how does one know at what level to play in Spades? The first question was mentioned by almost nobody. So, the majority kicked in with the catch-all of 5♣. I am a bit disappointed by the answers.

Lévy: “5♣. I would say 5♠ with the Ace-King of Spades instead of the Ace-King of Clubs; like everyone, I think.”

Harari: “5♣. Followed by 5♠, to show a slam hand and reassure my partner about the club control.”

Jill Meyers: “5♣. Over 5♥, I will say 5♠ so that we can stop (if Partner said 4♣ with ♠A932 ♥KJ764 ♦52 ♣83).”

Cronier: “5♣. Followed by 5♠ over 5♥. After East’s pass on the previous round, this sequence is necessarily natural and suggests slam in Spades by guaranteeing a first-round control in Clubs. If I had bid 5♠ directly over 4♣, I would be asking about a club control.” OK, OK; but we’re not being very advanced with all that…

Schmidt had an original and quite pragmatic suggestion: “6NT. Perhaps I should say 5♣ but I do not believe for a second that my partner, who passed over 3♣, has two Ace-Kings and will be happy with either major suit. I also do not see (I must be lacking in imagination) how to play it from his hand to protect against a heart lead (♠KJ103 ♥AJ103 ♦J1042 ♣5 is a plausible hand, despite East not having raised the pre-empt). Let us avoid the accident of a red-suit singleton lead and the Ace of Spades with East; so, 6NT.”

It is certain that if North had a dozen high-card points, this is simpler; but could he not have a major two-suiter weak in high-card points (KJxxx two times, for example)?

Saporta is sure about the majors and so proposes an alternative: “4♦. North is giving me a choice between the majors but does not necessarily have much strength. In this context, I act as though over Landy. If he says 4♥, I will say 4♠. If he says 4♠, I will say 5♣. In both cases, I think I am showing my extras.”

Pacault has the same point of view about the majors but is more optimistic: “6♠. North seems to have four cards in both majors, without both Ace-Kings, or he would have doubled 3♣, and probably an Ace-King and an ace or a king, which makes 10 HCP.”

They are contradicted by Tignel: “5♣. Difficult to bid anything else at this stage: Spades is not necessarily the best trump suit. If North jumps to 6♦ or 6♥ over 5♣, I pass. If he bids 5♦, I say 5♠ (seems forcing to me). If he bids 5♥, I think that, in this context, he is promising both majors, so I sign off in 6♠. Making another cue bid with 6♣ would enable bidding the grand slam when North has both aces and both major-suit kings but North would probably be leading us a level too high when he has two aces and only one king.”

Finally, let us take an interest in the two contributions with the most detail and which put emphasis on the fact that North has not necessarily got a major two-suiter, which was indeed the underlying issue.

Kokish: “5♣. A priori, this 4♣ means that North can play in two suits. So he could have four hearts, five diamonds and little in Spades. A jump to 5♠ would indeed show the strength in points but not the weakness of the suit. When I say 5♠ over 5♦, I will be showing a strong hand without a running suit. With four hearts, I would have said 5♥ over 5♦, so North will know that I prefer Diamonds to Hearts. If North says 5♥ over 5♣, I think that he is showing a major two-suiter, so we will be well-placed.”

Bessis: “4NT. Extremely difficult problem. I am obliged to make a slam try with a hand this strong when my partner makes a positive bid over my take-out double. Still, forcing to slam would not be at all sensible; there could easily be two major-suit cards missing, even two aces if Partner has 5-4 or 5-5 in the majors. But he has not promised the majors at all! Partner could still have something in the style of ♠K ♥AK72 ♦J7632 ♣853, a hand with which he would a priori like to play in 4 Hearts or 5 Diamonds depending on whether or not I have four hearts. I do not think that 4NT by me can be natural at this stage. I intend to show a slam try somewhere, without certainty over the suit in which to play. With a strong single-suiter, I would instead say 5♣, a cue bid which, as Fred and I play in all these types of situations, would mean that I know where to play. I will say 5♠ over 5♣ or 5♥ and 6♦ over 5♦.”

This detailed and precise analysis really deserved an increase to 4NT’s score.

On this hand, Partner had ♠AJ103 ♥AJ752 ♦64 ♣63. Both major-suit kings were offside. But you could make a slam if you escaped a heart lead by eliminating the suits and playing Ace of Spades and a spade.

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-76645d5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember
Do not forget that a cue bid of a minor-suit opening after a take-out double does not always show a major two-suiter.

Scores
5♣: 100 (16 votes)
4NT: 50 (1 vote)
5♠: 20 (4 votes)
6NT: 10 (2 votes)
6♠: 10 (2 votes)
4♦: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 5: 3NT, the cure-all? Was he really supposed to say 3♣ over 2NT? As it happened, 3NT was going down (five hearts to lose); the right game was 5 Clubs: very difficult to reach except for the eight experts who opted for 3♠ while specifying for some that North should then say 4♣ if he is 4-0-6-3.

Lévy: “3♠. For fans of 3NT, here are a few arguments.

Adad: “3NT. Describing my hand’s distribution with a 3♣ bid is tempting but would give the impression of three suits (Diamonds, Hearts and Clubs) of equivalent quality. 2NT would indicate at least a singleton in Spades. And in 3NT, I have eight tricks if I gain the lead.”

Harari: “3NT. And Hamman’s rule again! I am showing around twenty points with a spade shortage and a stop in Clubs: not far off what I have.”

Wasquehal Club: “3NT. Almost a general tendency among our experts.”

However, the 3♣ bid, more descriptive, met with great success.

Lévy: 3♣. 2NT would not be forcing, 3NT a bit final with a void and, once again, the best contract could be in Clubs.”

Allavena: “3♣. Of course I still want to bid 3NT but I have too good a hand and that can wait. By saying 3♣, if my partner says 3NT, it is surely better to play it from his side!”

Quantin: “3♣. If 3NT is the right contract, it is surely better to play it from the other hand. If we are meant to end up in another contract, what better than 3♣ to look for it?”

Tignel: “3♣. With two suits that are almost already masters and just one point in Clubs, it would be bad play to bid 3NT directly. The 3♣ bid – which I will do first followed by 3NT – serves to transmit the message that an alternative contract to 3NT is very possible. If the right contract is 6 Clubs, we will have trouble finding it: we would need to continue with 4♣ but without 3NT as a lifejacket…”

Rocafort: “3♣. This is really so as not to seem too slobbish at the end of this series where I have not displayed a great sense of aesthetics; but I have little doubt that this will quickly end in 3NT. And if it can be played by North’s hand, that cannot be a bad thing.”

The final remarks by our experts are also interesting.

Jill Meyers: “3♣. If 2NT is forcing, it is the bid I would make to hear some further description of my partner’s hand. Otherwise, I choose 3♣.”

Schmidt: “3♣. In the framework of my system, 2♠ is a positive bid, forcing to game (with a weak hand, even with five cards in Spades, we say 2NT), which does not exclude King-Queen-fourth in Clubs. I therefore feel forced to bid 3♣, before suggesting 3NT over any 3-level bid by my partner.”

Bessis: “2NT. Forcing, as the way I play with Fred, Responder repeating his major is forcing to game after a reverse, which is not standard. That will mean I can potentially hear 3♦ (a bad fit, from what I can tell by looking at my cards), even 3♣ natural, in which case we will look for slam in Clubs.” As I play in the same way, I upped the score of 2NT…

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-7daac7c" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
A convention that I have adopted: after a reverse, Responder repeating his major is forcing to game.
