Should we stay there?

There would be danger in bidding on: my hand was very average and I would be risking going down at the 3-level. Vulnerable, I might get myself doubled for one down and take a big hit. The prudent thing would therefore be to pass. With only an 8-card fit and flat distribution, we do not venture up to the 3-level.

Once again, I would make an exception. I knew my opponents were in a good contract and that I would not score well by allowing them to play in 2♠, so I wanted to tempt fate.

I chose to bid on with 2NT for a few reasons:

I had stops in the opponents’ suits.

2NT= scores 120; better than 3♦= which scores 110.

If I went one down in 2NT, 3♦ would often be going down too.

In NT, I would be playing the hand from my side, so had more chance of receiving a favourable ♠ lead which would allow me to make the ♠K.

But my fears were realised: I got doubled in 2NT. I tried to run to 3♦ but I was doubled once again.

And I played in 3♦X for a bottom or a top. Nice trumps, a good singleton and a double fit in the red suits.

On the lead of the ♣5, I chose to play the ♣2 from the dummy, at risk of no longer being able to prevent the run of the ♣ if Opener played a middling ♣. I knew that Opener would be forced to play “third hand high” unless he held AKQ9 in ♣.

Opener took the ♣Q, then cashed the ♣A, which I ruffed. Leader showed the ♣5 and then the ♣6. I now knew the exact ♣ position. Opener held ♣AKQ without the ♣9, otherwise he would have played the ♣A or the ♣9 on the lead. And the leader held three small ♣ since he gave count upwards.

I also knew that the ♥ were not breaking 4-1, since both defending players would already have played the singleton ♥.

Ruffing a ♠ loser from my hand with a trump from the dummy is often the best strategy but not here. The ♠ finesse is doomed to failure: the bidding had shown that all the strength was with Opener. There was too much of a risk of getting ruffed in ♥ or overruffed in ♣ if I gave up the lead to the defence too many times.

I decided to push out the ♥A immediately. Opener won and played another ♥ to open up a ruff. I would now need to tackle the trumps. The issue of whether to take an immediate finesse against the ♦J came to mind for several reasons:

When your opponents double a part-score for penalties, the trumps are often breaking badly.

Opener made a take-out double of ♦, so he could have a singleton.

I would give up on that since it did not stand up. If Opener had 4315 distribution, he would probably have bid on to 3♠ rather than doubling me for penalties twice. I tackled the trumps in three rounds and presented the ♣J from the dummy as a “ruffing finesse”. One of Dummy’s ♣ honours was established to allow me to discard a ♠ loser.

I made 5 tricks in ♦, 3 in ♥ and 1 in ♣.

3♦X= got me 99%!

Each one of my unusual actions led me to be the only one of almost a thousand players to play in 3♦X=. When that ends up being a top, one feels unique and vindicated. I also know that if the ♣9 had been with the opener, I would have gone down and got a zero. I would then have felt like “the only idiot”. Sometimes, just a little detail takes you from glory to ridicule!

In bridge, there is no obligation to follow the system. If it was a singleton, there would be a danger in trying the ♦ finesse. East would win with the ♦K and give a ruff. Following this reasoning, many of you rose with the ♦A. This was not my choice for the following reasons:

The ♦A was the only entry back to the dummy. If I parted with it on the lead, the rest of the hand would be very difficult.

I was missing the King of Trumps. I was not sure of being able to tackle the trumps correctly and I might still suffer a ruff in ♦.

Sometimes, the leader would have the ♥A and the ♣A but lead the ♦ by default. It might even be that the ♦ finesse was working.

If the lead really was a singleton, the opening leader would take a ♦ ruff but would then have a difficult return on the third trick.

East won the lead with the ♦K, I unblocked the ♦Q to create 2 ♦ entries back to the dummy, and he switched to ♣. West took the ♣AQ and played back a ♦. I won with Dummy’s ♦A, unblocking the ♦J. I ran the ♠9 and the finesse worked. I drew all the trumps and ran the ♦ for 10 tricks. Making 3♠ was already excellent but +1 got me a top.

Third deal: Priority to the natural

I opened with 1♠, 2♣ overcall and I was in the balancing seat.

2 options were possible: bidding a natural lower-ranking second suit with 2♦ or a take-out double.

Generally, one should choose the double for the following reason: your partner might have passed with strong defence to ♣ and he would then have the opportunity to convert your take-out double into penalties. The East-West side would then suffer a big penalty, amplified by the vulnerability, which is unfavourable for them.

At IMPs, I would have chosen the double to try to get a big score.

As I had the ♣Q, it was less likely that my partner did have a trap pass for ♣. At pairs, I chose the option that would work out well “the most often”. A double would cause me problems if my partner bid 2♥. To avoid that, I reopened naturally with 2♦ and played in a 2♠ contract on the lead of the ♣A followed by the ♣K.

There were two tasks on this deal: drawing the trumps and establishing the ♦ length. I decided not to ruff the ♣K and to discard the inevitable ♥ loser. In aid of establishing the length in ♦, I preferred to save my trumps for later.

West played a small ♣, ruffed by East and I overruffed. I cashed the ♦A, then the ♠K and the ♠A, finishing in the dummy. The Queen of Trumps was third with the opening bidder. I played a ♦ from the dummy, East rose with the ♦K (the ♦ were 4-1). I won the ♥ return and cashed the ♦Q, ruffed. I still had enough trumps to make the rest. A trump to the dummy to establish my long ♦ with a ruff and 2 trumps with the declaring hand to regain the lead and cash the final established ♦.

2♠+1 brought in 83%.

What did you think of this article?
