{"id":95506,"date":"2024-08-02T13:06:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T12:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/?p=95506"},"modified":"2024-08-02T13:06:23","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T12:06:23","slug":"delicate-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/en\/delicate-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Delicate decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Header_DelicateDecision-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Delicate Decision\" class=\"wp-image-96364\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When it comes to making a tricky decision either in the bidding or the play of the cards, a good player must always try to get an idea of how the deal is handled by the majority of the players at the other tables<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-acff70f\" data-block-id=\"acff70f\"><style>.stk-acff70f{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When you take a decision that sets you apart from the field, two cases are possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The facts prove you right: your decision will pay off and you\u2019ll get a score close to the top because there are only few who will make the same choice as you.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t reach your goal: your isolation will then cost you dearly and your score will be close to the bottom.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose<strong> caution<\/strong> and knowingly make <strong>the same decision<\/strong> as the field, you know that you don\u2019t risk getting a bad score, regardless of the result of the races:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>This choice was right given how the cards lie<\/strong>: then your score will be a little higher than average.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You come to regret your caution because <strong>the risky option was the right one: your score will be below average but never very low, <\/strong>because you will be in good company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-86c341d\" data-block-id=\"86c341d\"><style>.stk-86c341d{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With the field\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As North, you pick up the following hand. It\u2019s the first deal in a regular club game. Your pair is one of the most experienced and you expect a result worthy of your status:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-afab0f0\" data-block-id=\"afab0f0\"><style>.stk-afab0f0 .stk--block-align-afab0f0{align-items:center !important}<\/style><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks has-text-align-center stk--block-align-afab0f0 stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-afab0f0-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-48ebf43\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"48ebf43\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-48ebf43-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"has-text-align-center stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-48ebf43-inner-blocks\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hand-EN-delicate-1024x286.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95514\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-8c7ff0b\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"8c7ff0b\"><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-8c7ff0b-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-8c7ff0b-inner-blocks\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The bidding (Dealer West, All Vul) :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bid-EN-delicate.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95515\" style=\"width:auto;height:200px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>South promised four Spades in a hand of 8 to 10 HCP. This means that in combined hands your side can\u2019t have more than 24HCP, in the best case. <strong>Should you pass or bid 3&#x2660; to invite partner to game?<\/strong> <strong>It\u2019s clear that playing IMPs and in a high level competition it wouldn\u2019t be a bad idea to try to get the game bonus. But this deal, played at the start of a modest club tournament, must be considered in a different way<\/strong>: you know that many of your competitors (who mainly count high card points) will surely not go further. So why risk &#8220;sinking&#8221; your result, obtaining a score close to zero if the attempt isn\u2019t successful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some thought, you decide to pass! West leads the Diamond King and you put your cards down\u2026 Now put yourself in South\u2019s place and think about the play:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-5317f45\" data-block-id=\"5317f45\"><style>.stk-5317f45{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diagram-delicate-EN-1024x932.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95516\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-ae0fb71\" data-block-id=\"ae0fb71\"><style>.stk-ae0fb71{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You have the possibility to take ten tricks if everything goes well and trumps break 3-2 (after the opening, it\u2019s certainly West who has the Ace of Hearts). To make this happen, you\u2019ll have to ruff two Diamonds in dummy, but the timing is crucial: <strong>only if you duck the first trick,<\/strong> will you be able to quietly get your two ruffs after drawing trumps. Your Club honors allow you to get back to hand twice so that you can ruff a second Diamond and then play a Heart towards the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By playing as indicated, you start the tournament with +170 in your column.<strong> You missed the game! <\/strong>However, at the end of the tournament, you can see that out of eleven tables on which the deal was played, the game was bid only three times and only one of the three declarers was able to bring it home. All other pairs stopped in a part-score and only two (including you) were able to get ten tricks and score +170.
