We now know that he has three Diamonds, so he has at least four Clubs. If he had five, your partner would be void in Clubs and therefore hold a five-card card major, which he would have chosen for his opening lead. Therefore, declarer had four Clubs <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-a988f10\" data-block-id=\"a988f10\"><style>.stk-a988f10{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the distribution of the hidden hands?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Declarer had three Diamonds and four Clubs, leaving six cards in the majors which must be 3-3 because he denied a four-card major. This means he has 3-3- 3-4 distribution while your partner has a 4-4-4-1 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>. While you reconstruct the hidden hands, declarer has finished making his declarer plan and calls for the Diamond Ace from dummy and plays the 10 from his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-b2d7551\" data-block-id=\"b2d7551\"><style>.stk-b2d7551{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which Diamonds does your partner have?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your partner had two honours (KQ, KJ or QJ), then declarer would have a holding with which he would have let the lead run towards his hand (J10x, Q10x, K10x, respectively). Similarly, if your partner held the King or Queen, declarer would have QJ10 or KJ10, respectively and would also have played a small card from dummy. You deduct that your partner started with Jack-fourth <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>. At trick two, declarer calls for the Club 2 from dummy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-7e6e624\" data-block-id=\"7e6e624\"><style>.stk-7e6e624{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which card do you play?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no urgent need to jump up with the Ace, especially since you might swallow a possible stiff King from partner! So, you play a small Club <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>. Declarer wins the trick with the King (partner following with his singleton 5) and plays another Club to the Queen and Ace, your partner discarding the Spade 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-3136e39\" data-block-id=\"3136e39\"><style>.stk-3136e39{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can you hope to take the next four tricks in Hearts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your partner would be tasteful enough to hold AKxx in Hearts, you could beat this immediately. Admit, however, that if that were the case, he would probably have led the Ace of Hearts in the hope of taking the first five tricks or, at least, see the dummy before deciding on his defensive plan. It is therefore unreasonable to expect an immediate one down by playing a Heart <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0404;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-01e4e14\" data-block-id=\"01e4e14\"><style>.stk-01e4e14{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What assumptions of necessity do you make about your partner\u2019s holding in the majors?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Declarer has seven tricks in the minors. You know he has 9HCP in the minors, so he has 6-8 in the majors to justify his 1NT opening. If he has both the Ace and King of Hearts, he\u2019ll take at least nine tricks: so, your partner must have the Ace or King of Hearts <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(5 points)<\/span><\/strong>. The same goes if he has the Ace of Spades, so your partner must have that card as well <strong><span style=\"color: #fe0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(5 points)<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-87bf651\" data-block-id=\"87bf651\"><style>.stk-87bf651{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How will declarer make his contract if you play a Diamond next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Declarer has 9 points in the minors and for you to stand a chance he must have 3 or 4 in Hearts, leaving at least 2 for Spades, but he must not hold the Ace: this means he has at least the Queen. If he also has the Jack or not doesn\u2019t matter much because even if partner held it, it would be well placed for declarer. This means that a Diamond return would give ample time to declarer to establish a Spade trick or even three if necessary (if he doesn\u2019t have the Heart Ace) by playing a Spade from dummy towards his Queen and then a Spade from hand towards K-10. Add <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">10 points <\/span><\/strong>to your collection if you have anticipated declarer\u2019s various lines of play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-b631a26\" data-block-id=\"b631a26\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, after winning the Club Ace, which card do you play? What new assumption of necessity do you formulate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though pursuing the plan of establishing a Diamond won\u2019t work, playing a Club or Spade would be even worse. You are finally forced to play a Heart <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 points)<\/span><\/strong>. Your hope is to establish three tricks in the suit, which, together with the two black Aces, will be enough to accumulate five tricks. This requires the presence of the Heart 10 in partner\u2019s hand \u2012 a new assumption of necessity that gives you <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">10 points<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 because without it you won\u2019t be able to prevent declarer, who holds A10x or KJ10x, getting two tricks in the suit when it is your side that plays it. His best line of play is to try to steal a Spade trick before setting up the Clubs, by playing a Spade towards his Queen <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(5 bonus points) <\/span><\/strong>hoping for South to hold the Ace and commit the mistake of not playing it immediately \u2012 or, even better and sneakier, by playing the Jack from his hand <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">(10 bonus points) <\/span><\/strong>in order to simulate a finesse against the Queen (hoping for North to hold the Ace).
