Against a part-score contract, the penalty Double indicates at least four good cards in the opponent&#8217;s suit. At game level, we are obviously less demanding. The aim of his double here is to increase the penalty and get as close as possible to the score that he would have gotten for making Four Hearts (420). On this deal, Four Spades goes two down. This gives a score of +300, which is less than N\/S would have obtained by making Four Hearts, but it is better than if Four Spades would not have been doubled (+100). In a team match, this reduces the IMP loss. Four Hearts is easily made by playing the King of Spades at trick two and discarding a Diamond. The defense can cash one Diamond and play a Club. You win with the Ace, discard the last Club on the Queen of Spades and turn to trumps.
