Well done to those five, who won <strong>25 Diamonds!<\/strong> Here is my analysis of some of the deals from this tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"India Natt&#039;s Tournament of July, 2024\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wudnHoYp7iY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-801a135\" data-block-id=\"801a135\"><style>.stk-801a135{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-decran-01.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96888\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There was a very exciting opportunity available to those of you who were not too trigger-happy in the bidding: collecting +1400 at the 1-level!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 1&#x2663;, you should not be tempted to overcall 1NT because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You do not have the right shape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not have enough HCP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are unlikely to have any eight-card fit with your partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Having too many cards in the opponent\u2019s suit is often a hindrance in NT because it does not leave you with enough cards in the other suits that might provide a source of tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Partner then made the longed-for take-out double, I was delighted to pass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose to lead the &#x2660;Q rather than the &#x2666;K because my partner would be much more likely to make a take-out double with the ideal length and strength in &#x2660; than &#x2666;. After two rounds of &#x2660; winners, Partner switched to a trump and I was in the following position:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-decran-02.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96889\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>With unappealing red-suit switches and thinking that I would like to reduce Declarer\u2019s ability to ruff on this hand, I chose to play a trump. This looks dangerous but is not when one has this many trumps! My plan was to draw Declarer\u2019s last two trumps in one go at my next opportunity but, as it happened, Declarer decided to draw them on the very next trick. +1400!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-c5298b0\" data-block-id=\"c5298b0\"><style>.stk-c5298b0{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-2fbf1e2\" data-block-id=\"2fbf1e2\"><style>.stk-2fbf1e2{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-decran-03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96891\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>On this hand, I made the decision to pre-balance over 2&#x2660; with a take-out double, despite having three spades. The main reason for this, aside from the fact that I had a good hand with four hearts, was to do with the scoring. Often, players are more reluctant to compete at unfavourable; but it is important to remember that when your opponents are non-vulnerable, you only collect +50 per undertrick even if their contract is going down. Therefore, you can compete the part score more often than you think to aim for a cheap part-score sacrifice. And in cases like today, you might even be making!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember too that Partner already knows you don\u2019t have a normal take-out double, as you did not double directly over 1&#x2660;. Therefore, he will expect you to frequently only have two of the three suits you are \u201cpromising\u201d. Plus, &#x2666; is higher-ranking than &#x2663; and lower-priority than &#x2665;, so Partner will nearly always have 5+&#x2666; if he bids 3&#x2666; here; that means that the danger is lessened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#x2660;K lead made this a simple matter of establishing the &#x2660;T to discard my club loser \u2013 be careful to discard a club and not a diamond, as you can ruff the third round of &#x2666; in the dummy already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-0fc1452\" data-block-id=\"0fc1452\"><style>.stk-0fc1452{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-159a41b\" data-block-id=\"159a41b\"><style>.stk-159a41b{height:10px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal 3<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capture-decran-04.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96892\" style=\"width:auto;height:500px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Partner\u2019s 2&#x2660; bid showed an invitational hand with 5+ &#x2660; and 4 &#x2665; (otherwise why would he have chosen to bid Stayman rather than transferring?). With the South hand, I had a clear accept to 4&#x2660;: it was a good 16, despite the &#x2663;J, with its five-card suit and helpful-looking honours in Partner\u2019s second suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon the lead, I initially thought that it seemed likely to be from a singleton since Declarer had shown length in the suit. I therefore chose to play a spade to the &#x2660;K, planning to finesse against the &#x2660;J if necessary on the next round. This was because fewer &#x2665; means more &#x2660; on average!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After winning the &#x2660;A, East continued with a higher heart, showing three cards in the suit once West also followed.
