In a recent course for advanced players, in response to this question, 50% of the candidates defined this as a penalty Double. It’s possible to defend this point of view, but like South points out in his arguments, it’s the question of frequency that lets the scales lean towards a different definition, that of an informative Double, which promises a sufficient number of high card points to consider that the intervening side is, in fact, the offensive side.

Here, North must respond to his partner’s Double and give preference to bidding 4NT, looking for the best trump suit. I hadn’t foreseen this 2♣ bid and, rather than bid a balancing 2NT, I doubled precisely to show why I had passed in the previous round. Otherwise, the general advice, is “If in doubt, do not pass.” Of course, it is better to talk about most of the situations, but the “logic of the sequence” can also allow you to make the right diagnosis. North thought his partner’s Double was a delayed negative Double with 5-7HCP. But as his partner points out, balancing with a weak hand without certainty of finding a fit is too dangerous, especially in a sequence where the opponents didn’t show a fit: West even denied Spade support. To correctly interpret his partner’s Double, North must ask himself where the Spades have gone. How are they distributed around the table? He has one Spade, East maximum two, and West didn’t repeat them over 2♣: South thus has at least five Spades and a hand strong enough to justify waking up the bidding. He seeks to punish his opponents. North must pass this Double as soon as he has at least three Clubs.

Let’s congratulate South for his sense of adaptation.

The bid responsible for the accident: North’s 2♥ when he misinterpreted his partner’s Double.

The correct auction:

Problem n°3

The facts:

2 Spades doubled just made when 3 Hearts is laydown, I let you read the exasperation of these two young budding champions.

Arguments:

North: “From the moment I passed 2♠, I limited my hand in strength and distribution, it’s useless to show me that you have the maximum of your bid which is already in the range of 8-10 points. For me, this Double is 100% for penalties.”

South: “I can’t double a part-score contract for penalty when I’m sitting before the hand with long trumps. This overcall may give us a chance to finally find a miraculous 4 Hearts because now I can show you that I’m super close to bidding an invitational 2NT. There is no question with my hand of letting them play 2 Spades.”

Verdict:

Here again, the situation has not been considered, studied and resolved by the two players. Logic must therefore provide the answer to the problem raised by this Double. When West overcalls 2♠, North has many ways to bid his cards depending on his distribution and point range: pass, bid on to 3♥, make a trial bid, jump to game. The first two options, Pass and 3♥, exclude any possibility of playing 4 Hearts. 3♥ in particular doesn’t allow South to bid game, it’s even forbidden. North will raise to 3♥ in accordance with the law of total trumps, the law of total tricks and its patches. The argument that the Double can’t be for penalties because his trumps are in front of West’s length can’t be accepted any more than the previous reason. The Double of 2♠ is 100% for penalties. Let’s remember that North doesn’t have a singleton Spade.
