My hand was a bit too weak to continue and my complementary holding in ♠ will be useful to play in NT.

The dummy was revealed on the lead of the ♠8. The ♥ blockage and the lack of entries to the dummy made this contract delicate. Exceptionally I played dummy’s ♠Q (high in second position). West opened 1♠, he was known to have ♠AJ9. I obliged him to play the ♠A on the ♠Q while preventing him from playing a second round of ♠, for fear of giving me dummy’s ♠10.

After the ♠A, West switched to ♥. I unblocked ♥AK, noting the bad ♥ break. I cashed the ♣A and saw the ♣5 on my left and the ♣9 on my right. Not seeing the ♣4, I deduced that the ♣ were breaking 4-2. The ♣9 suggested that the ♣Q was now singleton. Argine doesn’t use count signal with the 9s. If this 9 is a mandatory card, West must hold ♣Q9. I cashed the ♣K and the ♣Q fell!

Bingo! I could run the ♣ and unblock the ♥K. I ended up giving up the lead to the defenders in ♦. They made a mistake and the opener found himself blocked in hand with the ♦A and gave up dummy’s ♠10 to me in the end. 2NT+1 got me 98%! The bidding went wild and I had to make a decision at the 5-level. Should I pass over 5♦? My chances of defeating this contract were very slim. Bidding on to 5♥ may pay off if I only go two down or if the defenders don’t double me.

I finally passed and that was the right decision. My hand was too weak to ensure 9 tricks in ♥ despite my partner’s 3♥ fit. In card play, two opposite strategies can be considered: ruffing the ♣ losers with dummy’s trumps or drawing trumps and running the long ♥ suit.

Both lines of play are good. They have their advantages and drawbacks. You must decide quickly. One strategy relies on playing a trump quickly, the other one doesn’t. If I play on the ♣ ruffs, I will have trouble capturing the ♠Q with a finesse and taking 11 tricks will be tricky. In a pairs tournament like here, I opted for the optimistic strategy, the one enabling me to make an overtrick when everything goes well. In the end both strategies lead to the same result: 10 tricks and 72%.

Deal 7: Pushing opponents to make mistakes

My partner remained passive on this deal and as many of you did, I bid 3♥. I could try finessing against the ♦K but the chances of succeeding were quite slim. The opening leader didn’t hold the Ace and King of ♣ (otherwise he would have led a ♣) and since he opened, he probably had the ♦K. I cashed the ♥K, visualising the 4-0 break, and the marked finesse against the ♥J worked. Traditionally, you must play a ♥ to the ♥J and then think it over. But starting off with the ♥Q is an option when you believe that most of the opponents’ ♥ are with the opening leader.

The ♣ lead in the suit opened by my partner is suspicious. If it is a shortage, the opening leader is more likely to have ♥. So, I chose another way of handling the trump suit. I started off with the ♥Q covered by the ♥K taken by the ♥A, and I returned to hand in ♠ to run the ♥8, which held. In the end I took all the tricks and scored 94%.

Deal 9: Shall we trust the robot?

I opened 1♦, as many of you did, even if I admit that I really wanted to devalue my hand by 1 point to open 1NT.

After I opened 1♦, I rebid 2NT to show a balanced hand of 18-19 points and my partner bid 3♠. I was very tempted to pass. To me this 3♠ bid was non-forcing. Having a decent hand, my partner could make a 3♥ cue bid. So, I clicked the bid to view how the robot defines it. It didn’t agree with me and considered this bid as forcing. I decided to trust the robot and bid again. And I shouldn’t have! North was very weak as I suspected. Passing over 3♠ would have got me the top. In bridge, misunderstandings with your partner occur frequently.
