Declarer won with the ♣K, cashed three rounds of ♠ and played a small ♥. My partner then rose with the ♥A in order to not cash his ♣: the only defence which gives away the contract. Although all I had done was follow suit, I was subjected to a very meagre 15%!

I would show my discontent. With hindsight, I finally understood the problem. Why did Argine make this error opposite me and not opposite the majority of the other players? Perhaps I needed to help it by playing the ♣Q on the lead?

No, the other players played like me across the board. This could only be a signalling problem. I have, however, been playing the standard system for years. In going to the Settings tab, followed by Card Play Conventions, I realised that there had been an update recently. By default, some of the “No Signals” boxes were ticked. I had been complaining for months as I had not been understanding Argine’s defensive signalling and I realised today that I had been playing all that time without any signals!

A really long time ago, in clubs, we played in a free game mode. We changed partners every few deals, sometimes without knowing each other, and it was all very friendly. Signalling was often non-existent; we used other techniques to construct the hidden hands (if he had had those, he would have played in this way). It was very formative.

Deal 4: Oh, I’d see my name emblazoned in neon

Some of you chose to open 2NT; I could have made the choice to do so and that would have worked really well on this deal. Playing in 4♥ on the lead of the ♠J is much more delicate. East having passed initially, he had not opened a weak 2 in ♠, so should only have five cards to the A10 in ♠. I covered the ♠J with Dummy’s ♠Q to force East to win. He could not return a ♠ away from his ♠10 without giving up a trick to the ♠9 in the dummy. He switched to the ♦J; I won in the dummy to try the ♥ finesse, which lost to West’s ♥K; he returned a trump.

To justify his 2-level overcall on five bad ♠, I imagined East to hold the ♣KQ. He would then be the victim of a strip squeeze as I would run my trumps and my ♦. Four cards from the end, West would have to keep the ♣KQ and ♠10x; I would play the ♣A and a ♣ and West would lead away from his ♠10 to give me Dummy’s ♠9. An expert play! Except that that did not work; it was West who held the ♣Q and I went two down to score 5%! As usual, my first reflex was to grumble. Why did Argine overcall 2♠ with nothing? I felt misled. And as usual, after the instant grumble, with hindsight, I learned.

I should have been wary of the bidding as, with 10 HCP and five ♠, Argine could have opened 1♠ in third seat. I could also have refined my card play by producing the ♣J from the dummy after the third round of trumps. That is what my friend Pawel did (thanks for this lesson). If Argine held the ♣KQ, it would be obliged to cover the ♣J with the ♣Q and I would then finish on the squeeze. As it happened, Argine plays a small ♣ on the ♣J and I guess that the squeeze is not working. I go down by 1 and almost secure an average.

Deal 5: I am max

What should one open with this hand?

I was strong enough to open 2♣ but we avoid this type of opening with a 5431 two-suiter. I myself, upon exploring the various opponents’ breaks, would convince myself that the ♥, unusually, had more than one chance in two of breaking nicely. I therefore played ♥ before ♠, wrongly. Because Declarer had denied 4 cards in ♠ and because my partner had to hold three big cards to have a top-of-sequence lead, I would therefore win with the ♠A to return a ♠ through Declarer’s ♠Q. With a five-card major, with a six-card minor, with a stiff honour, with 14 HCP, sometimes even 13! It is very rare that good players choose to open 1NT but I do not follow suit, which is what happened on this hand:

With a 5332 14-count, I often open 1NT; but not here. I find this hand very ugly; I even want to evaluate it at 13 HCP. When I have no aces, I tend to devalue by a point. Besides, the red-against-red vulnerability is very unfavourable for those playing in a 1NT contract. I chose the more traditional 1♠ opening. And an equally traditional 2♠ rebid. I ended up playing in 3NT by the North hand. Those who chose a NT opening or rebid would play 3NT from the South hand. And, as it often does, it would be chance that would be the decider for us. I would receive a favourable lead which would help me a lot to make 11 tricks for 77%.

Deal 10: I do not understand Argine

On defence against 3NT, my partner led a ♦. Declarer won and ran his long ♣. We would need to discard. In principle, with no hope for a ruff, one avoids creating a void by discarding for the following reason. If your partner has the winners, you need to keep a card in this suit in order to reach his hand in that case. If it is your opponent who has the winners, he will see your discard in the suit where you have created a void, which will give him precious indications about the break of the suit.

Argine has not mastered this concept. I would discard ♦ twice on the ♣ in order to show it that I still had one and that its ♦ were good. But Argine would discard ♥ three times, whereas it could have discarded the ♠6 without any trouble. And when Declarer tried the finesse against the ♥K, Argine discarded, thus signalling to Declarer that the ♥ finesse was not working. This ended up costing us a trick for 44%.

What did you think of this article?
