The sixth club is not sufficient for taking out this penalty double. Imagine North has just one club and two or three small hearts. Where would we go when we have 500 or 800 to score?”

Kerlero approves: “Pass. Sure, it is unusual for a double of an opponent’s raise to be penalties. Nevertheless, I have already shown my distribution and if North had had the desire to bid up to the 5-level, they could have just done it themselves! Is my sixth club a sufficient argument for deviating? I don’t think so.”

Lévy: “Pass. After showing a specified two-suiter, the double is 100% penalties; this is not going to be cheap!”

Jill Meyers: “Pass. I have shown my hand and my partner has decided. No-one is asking for my opinion.”

This deal from the Mixed Teams Trials was recognised by some experts. It does, however, pose a serious problem: will North more often have a real penalty double, such as AJ108 in spades and an honour in diamonds, or a hand with some points but no real fit that enables bidding over the top? For example, quite close to the real hand: ♠Axx ♥Jx ♦Axxxx ♣Jxx?

Many judged that the second case was more likely and therefore bid over the top due to the sixth club and spade void. There were numerous and varied options, notably:

Harari: “5♣. I recognise the deal, so it is difficult not to be influenced… For me, partner’s double is penalties as he passed initially and my distribution is relatively precisely known. So, partner having points in spades is causing me to give up on slam.”

A bit strange of David here: why, if the double is for penalties, pull it with Ace-King and Ace-King-Queen?

Club de Pornic: “5♠. After passing initially, North’s pass is not penalties but a raise (up to you to choose) with a likely diamond control. So, 5♠, to go to slam.”

Pacault: “5♣. The spade void and sixth club encourage bidding 5♣: slam is still in the picture and the double of 4♠ is not showing many trump tricks but a certain misfit with some strength.”

Hackett: “6♣. For me, the double shows values and is not penalties.”

Duguet: “4NT. More encouraging than 5♣ as I could still be making a slam.”

Cronier: “6♣. I know the hand, of course. It is therefore difficult to answer. Even if the double tends to be penalties, it will be extremely rare for it to come from a large number of points in spades. So, saying 6♣ really seems to be a good bet.”

Toffier: “6♣. The double of 4♠ shows some strength without necessarily points in spades. With this really strong two-suiter, I think that bidding 5♣ is insufficient. Passing 4♠ doubled out does not seem like a good alternative.”

Schmidt: “4NT. My partner’s double seems to me to fall in the category of ‘I also have the right to a say’, with a hand bordering on an opening bid, containing defensive tricks and asking for me to exercise my judgement. And East made a weak opening, so with spades, and West, who passed initially, would not have said 4♠ without a very good fit. I bid 4NT to find out which fit to play in, before bidding a slam.”

Libbrecht: “5♠. My partner’s double is not 100% penalties: it shows some strength. He should maybe have an honour in spades (unlikely that he has two when the opponents are in 4 Spades) and at least one big diamond honour for having doubled. With only three hearts or three clubs, North has no reason to bid up to the 5-level, even if he has some good cards. I would have taken on my responsibilities and bid 5♠ just in case, by any chance, my partner held dream cards.”

Post-mortem: partner had ♠Axx ♥Jx ♦K109xx ♣Jxx. The diamond lead was beating the slam unless South had bid 4NT or 5♠, which would make it North who played in 6 Clubs and could not go down! For example:

Chemla: “3♠. If my partner has a strong single-suiter, he should say 3♠, which a priori does not promise a heart fit at all, nor does it deny one.” I was therefore hoping for a bit more explanation by the experts. I was therefore a bit disappointed, as they almost universally advocated a 3♠ cuebid to show some strength but with no real guarantees about the follow-up to this perfectly nebulous sequence.

The disillusionaries:
Lévy: “3♠. Much too strong to jump to 4♥, little inclination to convert the double, especially at this vulnerability, the follow-up sequence will decide the final level.”

Harari: “3♠. Not sure that 3♦ is forcing or does not show a canapé hand. Let’s make the sequence game-forcing. 4♣ from partner should deny three cards in hearts but, once again, you should discuss that.”

Cronier: “3♠. The vulnerability does not tempt one to pass. Saying 3♠ followed by 4♥ shows a stronger hand than a direct jump to game. Obviously, North might have doubled with a powerful single-suiter and it would be necessary to play in 3NT. Or with a strong, fairly balanced hand without a spade stop. Very difficult on the follow-up but, in any case, I see no alternative for now.”

Kokish: “3♠. Too much strength and slam potential to pass. If 2NT had been forcing, that would have been my bid, as that would allow North to be more at ease to describe their hand; but I do not believe that to be the case in France. I am therefore obliged to bid 3♠.”

This contribution from Kokish found an echo in that from Tignel: “3♠. The 3♠ bid is very ambiguous: it could be from a balanced hand without a stop, a slammy hand with five cards in hearts or a slammy hand with four cards in clubs. And the follow-up sequence will not clarify the situation, as I will bid 4♦ over the likely 4♣ by my partner. It seems tempting to play a 2NT bid here as Lebensohl, as one might do in response to a double of a weak 2♠ opening: the bids of 3♣, 3♦ and 3♥ would then show a minimum invitation, whereas the 2NT bid would either be a weak hand (we will decide the contract on the next turn), or a slammy hand (we will bid 3♠ with hearts or 4♣ with clubs). As for the direct 3♠ bid, it would be reserved for balanced hands without a stop.”

Schmidt: “3♠. First point: North is not obliged to double with a minimum opening on the pretext that he has three cards in hearts (we are at the 3-level). He has a decent hand, or even a strong one. I could therefore be cold for a small or grand slam. But with eight trumps at the most (in hearts) and lots of losers in my hand, I would need the perfect cards opposite. Is that a reason to pass (very speculative as to the final total on the bill) or settle for a game? Let’s not accept that; but as it is, alas, too late to agree that 2NT should be forcing in this sequence (never mentioned in my partnership), the cuebid is the only bid I have available, since 3♦ should show a weak canapé. Let us see where this leads.”

To avoid fleeing into the unknown, two experts opted for alternative bids, including Chidiac: “3NT. In my system, as it does across the Atlantic, the support double only applies if a rebid of responder’s major can be made at the 2-level; otherwise, double (like here) shows a strong hand with or without three-card support. To show the strength for game as South in this context, we have two sensible bids at our disposal: 3♠ or 3NT. 3♠ will entail some follow-up bidding and 3NT, though a slight underbid, is the pragmatic bid which best describes South’s hand and is my choice! Indeed, this jump to 3NT shows a hand with 13-15 HCP and a double stop in spades, one (or more) diamond stop(s) and might also include five cards in hearts, the only unknown being the club shortage.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-76645d5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-76645-d-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember
The forcing 2NT bid in this auction: very practical a priori but obviously needs work.

Scores

3♠️: 100 (21 votes)
4♥️: 5 (1 vote)
3NT: 5 (1 vote)

Deal 5: Another try?

(*) Splinter

To finish, two hands on the theme: how do you go about ensuring that you won’t end up playing in a bad slam when you lack the space for a conversation? I have already made a slam try, we have a diamond loser (without a void) and if partner had the ace of spades, the king of hearts and a club control, he would have bid Blackwood over my 4♥ bid.”

Adad: “5♠. The 4♦ bid is not very strong, so no question of finding North with the ace and king of spades and the king of hearts, as well as the ace of clubs. With a diamond loser, slam would be 50% at best.”

Sylvie Willard: “5♠. I do not have the ace of diamonds and 4♥ already showed the ace or king of hearts.”

On the other side, all those who chose to try their luck again bet unanimously on North having a diamond void, which would explain the absence of Blackwood.

Harari: “5♥. The absence of Blackwood from my partner could well come from a diamond void but he could just as well hold ♠K7532 ♥K54 ♦– ♣A8652 (very good slam) as ♠K7532 ♥854 ♦– ♣AQ652 (average slam) or ♠97532 ♥K854 ♦– ♣AK52 (ridiculous slam). I will therefore make another try.”

Duguet: “5♥. A final try in case my partner has a diamond void…”

Toffier: “5♥. A splinter does not tend to show a strong hand (here, if North has lots of strength with a spade fit and diamond shortage, they can start by bidding 3♣ or 3♦). The 5♣ bid is therefore discouraging, as it shows points in my void. Let us nevertheless continue to describe the hand as North could hold a diamond void, something like ♠A9532 ♥7542 ♦- ♣KJ64. Slam would then be about 75%.”

Schmidt: “5♥. I bid 4♥, which already showed hope for slam, so the temptation to stop now is strong (5♠). But one question is nagging at me: why did my partner not bid Blackwood? Either he is still uncertain (but what is he missing?) or he has… a diamond void (such as ♠K7532 ♥K74 ♦– ♣K8652). Let us go with another optimistic bid.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-68f23a5" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-68-f-23-a-5-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember
A splinter is never a very strong bid. Slam could just as well be cold as very remote and I lack real ways of exploring without getting myself into danger (I am missing, for example the fifth spade required to bid 4NT followed by 5♠). I think that I will therefore choose the very cowardly bid of 4♠ and I am already preparing all my excuses for a lack of faith if it goes badly.” and Chemla: “4♠. Yes, I know, I’m a coward; but not always… But I do refuse to give in to the opponents’ pressure by letting them push me up to excessive levels.”

For everyone else, this was a problem of knowing how to reach them with the best guarantee possible. The simplest is obviously to go for pragmatism like at Pornic Club: “6♠. East-West’s bids show at most one heart in North’s hand, who has an opening hand with four spades. Let’s go!”

Another option, not so rough:
Duguet: “4NT. Followed by 5♠ to show a slam try. I do not want to jump to 6♠ so as not to punish my partner for doubling with distribution and a minimum hand.”

Very well; but what should partner do with ♠Q872 ♥A ♦QJ963 ♣Q82? This was the real hand. Say 6♠? Slam is good with a hand that is far from being maximum! As it happened, the spades were 5-0 and the king of clubs offside, so you needed to stop in 5 Spades…

The technical bid of 5♠ asking for a heart control to bid a slam only gathered seven votes. Many considered that with three hearts in hand, the shortage opposite was more likely than not but nowadays, one never knows…

Kokish: “5♠. You can jump to 6♠ and miss the grand slam or go down in small slam if North holds ♠Q632 ♥75 ♦KQJ5 ♣KQ6. There are two ways of proposing a slam: 4NT followed by 5♠ or a direct jump to 5♠, which is surely the perfect technical bid, suggesting two immediate heart losers and all the aces. Nevertheless, lots of experience within the partnership cannot hurt when deciding between the two bids.”

Purveyors of the same message, Tignel: “5♠. 17 wonderful HCP and not a single wasted point in hearts – my partner’s presumed shortage – deserve a drive to slam. The bid of 5♠, which forces partner to bid a slam if he has a heart shortage, allows for one thing to verify that East has not played a trick on us (by jumping to 4♥ with only three cards), and for another to facilitate finding a grand slam if North has a first-round control in hearts (he will bid 5NT or 6♥). This big jump has one disadvantage, however: that of playing in a 4-3 fit if North’s double is from a 5-4-3-1 hand with three spades. But I see no solution to bidding slam in the right strain in every case…” and Libbrecht: “5♠. I cannot resign myself to saying less than 5♠, to ask my partner whether he is controlling the hearts. At this vulnerability, one does not know what the opponents are capable of. Of course, North should be singleton in hearts but it costs nothing to check. In any case, if North is singleton in hearts, I want to play in a slam and I do not see myself making a try and then stopping.”

Finally, the last bandwagon of experts was not messing around and forced to slam, looking for the right suit. Lévy: “5♥. Forcing to slam. Responding 4NT then 5♠ over 5♣ or 5♦ will not suffice.”

Jill Meyers: “5♥. I am hesitating between 5♥ and 5♠ but I have so many aces that it will be too difficult for my partner to bid a slam over 5♠. What is more, there is no guarantee that my partner holds four spades and I hate jumping to 5♠ with only four trumps.”

<defs><linearGradient id="linear-gradient-7daac7c" x1="0" x2="100%" y1="0" y2="0"><stop offset="0%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-1)"></stop><stop offset="100%" style="stop-opacity:1;stop-color:var(--linear-gradient-7-daac-7-c-color-2)"></stop></linearGradient></defs>

Remember:
The technical bid at the 5-level asking for a control in the opponents’
