Before going into the details, I would say that South lacked judgment and that North didn\u2019t know of a useful convention that you may yourself discover for the first time in these pages. Yes, it takes six cards to repeat your suit opposite an ambiguous rebid, because opener could hold a singleton Heart after his first two bids. But evaluating the cards you have in hand allows you to deviate from the principles and, with hands like this, assess the significant gap in the potential of your hand in favor of playing with Hearts as trumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Heart contract will be doubtlessly superior opposite a regular hand with two or three Hearts and often even opposite a singleton Heart. Bidding 2&#x2665; with this distribution and suit quality is the mark of good judgment. It is also understandable that North would like to be able to suggest Hearts as trumps but he cannot naturally bid his Hearts. Bidding 2&#x2665; would indeed promise a hand in the range of 15-17HCP. So, what can be done? Give 2&#x2663; a conventional meaning and use it to show a residue of three Hearts in a 4-3-5-1 in the range of 11-14HCP. South can then choose to play either 2 Diamonds or 2 Hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-9ad96ae\" data-block-id=\"9ad96ae\"><style>.stk-9ad96ae{height:20px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The bid responsible for the accident <\/strong>: <br>Let\u2019s share the wrongs, 60-40. <br>\u2022 1NT over 1&#x2660;: 60%.<br>\u2022 The Pass over 1NT: 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are two possible correct sequences :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns opponents in the other room had bid and made 4 Hearts.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arguments :<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North : <\/strong>&#8220;I see no reason to show a medium quality Heart suit when I have a doubleton honor in your suit and you already described that you held at least nine cards in the black suits. There is a real risk I\u2019ll find myself playing 2 Hearts in a 5-1 fit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South :<\/strong> &#8220;And yet, that\u2019s what Bernard did in the other room. Rather than being pessimistic, the advantage of bidding your Hearts is to find a possible 5-3 fit and sometimes, as here, a making game with an eight-card fit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verdict :<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The attitude of this pair, and in particular that of the player sitting South, is not recommended. South entirely puts the blame on his partner and doesn\u2019t question his own bids at all. North sees no alternative to his decision but without a solid argument. Yes, answering 2&#x2665; over 2&#x2663; can lead to a bad contract but looking for a 5-3 fit in a major remains a priority. I will now suggest another convention that is much more common and that is based on a very known concept: showing your five Hearts by way of a transfer bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the sequence:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bid-p2.2.fr_-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99421\" style=\"width:450px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bid-p2.2.fr_-1.png 1000w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bid-p2.2.fr_-1-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/funbridge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bid-p2.2.fr_-1-768x470.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 2&#x2666; bid shows five Hearts. Opener only corrects the transfer when he holds two or three Hearts. With three cards and a non-minimum opening, he can even jump to 3&#x2665;. If opener has a singleton Heart, he repeats his Spades, but he can also respond 2NT with 15-17HCP and a Diamond stopper. However, we keep the possibility of bidding 2&#x2665; over 2&#x2663; with six Hearts or even with a five-card suit when you really want to set Hearts as trumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South has some responsibility in this accident. North<br>can have up to 10HCP to rectify to 2&#x2660; over 2&#x2663;: playing 3 No-Trump is not excluded if he stops Diamonds well and 4 Hearts either, because he hasn\u2019t shown his five Hearts! Two down in 2 Clubs when the Diamond game is an excellent bet; the game contract was not reached either in the other room where the opponents nevertheless discovered their nine-card fit, producing a net loss of 8 IMPs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arguments :<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>North : <\/strong>&#8220;What a weird idea to bid 1&#x2660; when you have six Diamonds and four Spades! I am not very proud of my 2&#x2663; bid with such a lousy five-card suit; we will have to get into the habit of rebidding 1NT with this type of distributions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sud :<\/strong> &#8220;When I answered 1&#x2660; I just applied a very simple rule that I recently re-read to the letter: when you are in the 6-10HCP range, give priority to the major. You just have to alert that responder\u2019s 1&#x2665; or 1&#x2660; can hide longer Diamonds. If I respond 1&#x2666; and you say 1&#x2665;, 1&#x2660; is fourth suit forcing and then, hello the damage!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verdict :<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case it\u2019s easier to determine who is responsible. South is completely wrong; North is aware that he could have done something else. Unfortunately, South is a victim of misinterpreted assertions and he is by not the only one. When you have 6-10HCP, you <strong>must <\/strong>bid your four-card major with four Diamonds and four in the major, you <strong>can <\/strong>respond 1&#x2665; or 1&#x2660; with four in the major and five Diamonds in a balanced hand, 4-2-5-2 or 2-4- 5-2. But you must avoid bidding your four-card major with five Diamonds and a singleton unless it\u2019s a bad five- card suit. And you always have to answer 1&#x2666; with a four- card major and six Diamonds.
