Interview with Gemlyoa 🎙️
After his victory in the May Bridge Trophy, we asked Gemlyoa a few questions about his bridge journey, the toughest moments of the tournament, and the keys to his success.
How long have you been playing bridge, and how did you get started?
I started in the 1980s by attending a free bridge course taught by a friend, a strong player from my hometown who wanted to bring younger players into the local club.
I played a little (and worked a lot!) before my children were born but did not play much again until I joined Funbridge in 2009.
Was there a specific opponent or round in this tournament that pushed you the hardest?
There were several, as I finished tied three times and only advanced because I had completed my match first.
My quarter-final match against Berik was certainly the most difficult, as he is a much stronger player than I am. The final against Galaxy3 was also extremely tense right until the very last deal.
What part of your game do you think made the difference in this knockout?
I tried to stay completely focused throughout all 176 deals and avoid playing too quickly, which can lead to the big mistakes I am still capable of making.
My errors were often balanced by good decisions because my opponents also made mistakes. In the end, I believe a good amount of luck is needed to make it through such a marathon.
Do you play with a preferred bidding system, and did it give you any advantage here?
I use a personalized system with its advantages and disadvantages. I do not think it gives me a particular edge over the long term.
I chose Muiderberg because it can be a very effective convention, and I enjoy playing it. However, I would like to make a small suggestion to Funbridge: this convention should come with a true 2♦ Multi, while the current option is limited to the weak version only.
Are there other Funbridge tournaments you are already looking forward to?
I feel like I already play too much, but I think I will continue taking part in special tournaments.
I also play some private tournaments and invite everyone interested to join the La T’Chaux tournament, a weekly 7-deal IMP event that I have organized for several years. I even provide a ranking calculated over the last 52 weeks to crown a “woooorld champion” — long before Funbridge came up with the idea of the Bridge Points Circuit 😉.
Between the BP Circuit and the Bridge Trophy, May was another exciting month of competition on Funbridge.
