Three defense problems
Counting points, carefully watching your partner’s count signals… and showing quite a bit of imagination: all essential qualities of a good defender.
Situation 1
Lead: 4 of Hearts.
South takes East’s Queen with the Ace, plays the 8 of Clubs to dummy’s Queen — the 5 from East — then the Queen of Diamonds runs to your King — 8 from East.
It’s your turn…
Situation 2
Lead: 5 of Hearts.
South takes East’s King with the Ace, plays the King of Diamonds to East’s Ace, and East returns the 4 of Hearts, to South’s 10.
What is your battle plan?
Situation 3
(1) Mini cue-bid, 8 HCP or more.
(2) At least four cards, minimum hand.
Lead: Jack of Spades.
South takes with dummy’s Ace — the King from East — then plays a Diamond to the Ace and another Diamond. East follows with the 2, then the Jack.
