4. The partner shows a strong hand and denies four cards in Hearts. He may have a strong one-suiter in Clubs and is hoping I can bid 3NT.

In the absence of a clear fit, no option is particularly attractive. I choose what I consider the best one, the most likely shape of partner’s hand being 1-3-4-5.

4NT. My partner, by doubling, is showing an unbalanced hand in the intermediate range with shortness in Spades, or, more rarely, a balanced stronger hand if East overcalled on a four-card suit.

In both cases, I want to reach game thanks to my three small Spades, my two top cards (King of Diamonds and Ace of Clubs), and my favorable intermediate cards.

Let’s give partner the information that I have interest in a Diamond game, in case their hand is 1-3-4-5.
