Indeed, 3♦ is the right bid. It shows a hand with at least 6 diamonds, quite powerful and about 7-7.5 tricks (that is about 15 points). And that is exactly what we have here.

It is sometimes possible to make a kind of false reverse with just 3 cards and a minor one-suiter, and a hand too strong for jumping to 3m. Here this is not the case. But if you replace the jack of spades by the ace, it would be possible to do so.

A diamond is missing to jump to 5♦. The best contract is perhaps 3NT. It is better to start with 3♦ without thrusting a game. Nothing will prevent you from signing off in 5♦ later.

10/20

Unlike the one before, the 2♦ bid is too pessimistic. True, it covers up to 16 points, but here we already have 7 tricks in diamonds. The hand is too strong to settle for 2♦. You could miss a game.

05/20

Bidding 2NT would show a hand of 18-19 points, which is not far from the hand with the 7 diamonds, but it promises a balanced hand, which is not the case at all here. It is therefore not possible to make this bid.

    • 3 diamonds but I am honestly thinking or hoping to get to 3nt. But not enough space to inquire about clubs and spades before 3nt after bidding 3diamonds so most likely it will be 5 diamonds as the contract.
