6. West’s silence is deafening. It suggests that my partner’s cue-bid comes from a fairly balanced hand, around 18–19 HCP. In that case, it is logical to assume that our side is in the grand slam zone.

If I choose 5, neither of us will have enough information to bid it. By contrast, 6 gives partner a precise picture of my hand. One underlying assumption: the opener does not bid 4 with a routine hand containing both majors. With that type, he would bid 3, over which 3♠ would be a relay to gather more information.

5. The most flexible bid to clarify partner’s hand.

He should hold some Diamonds, given West’s silence, perhaps even a club one-suiter, which would make a grand slam more attractive.

Otherwise, we can consider 6 over 5 and 6 over 5♠.
